PANESVILLE, OHIO – Sophomore Cody Lancaster (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) shattered the school 8,000-meter record on his way to a 10th place finish for the Lake Erie College cross country teams at the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday (Oct. 2) in Louisville, Ky.

Lancaster covered the E.P. Yom Sawyer State Park course in 26:35.30, a full 16 seconds faster than the record set last fall by senior Kyle Griffith (Painesville, Ohio/Harvey/Capital).  His time was the fastest of the Division II schools competing in the Silver Race and led the Storm men to a 12th place finish among the 29 competing schools.

"We've asked an awful lot of Cody this season with Kyle and Jimmy (Hudd) out," said head coach Bryan Harmon.  "But he has worked hard every practice and continues to get better each race. He's been a real leader for us this season."

Griffith, the team's top runner last fall and sophomore newcomer Hudd (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Ashland) have not competed for the Storm this season due to injury.

The Storm women set five personal records and finished in eighth place out of 28 as a team.   Junior Allison Wright (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) led the way with a time of 20:51.21 on the 5,000-meter course. It was the first time she cleared the 21-minute barrier in her career.

She was followed by sophomore Sammie Smith (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) at 21:10.61, freshman Shanita Fluker (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) at 21:24.28, sophomore Leah Jones (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) at21:26.18 and junior Kyle Herron (Perry, Ohio/Perry) at 21:28.19.  Those five Storm runners finished in the top 63 of the 235-runner field.

"The women ran a really great race," said Harmon.  "It' was a fast course, but there was some very stiff competition out there. The really worked as a team out there and to have five of them all run PR's on the same day is pretty impressive."

Behind Lancaster, freshman Nick Chlad (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) finished in 65th individually with a time of 28:06.60.  Sophomore Greg Gerber (Fremont, Ohio/Clyde was next at 28:36.40, followed by classmate Devin O'Neil (Concord, Ohio/Mentor) at 29:51.00, sophomore David Gobrogge (Akron, Ohio/Green) at 31:21.20 and junior Zach Adams (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) at 32:17.50.

The Storm has two weeks off until competing in their second short course race of the season at Tiffin University on Oct. 23 as a tune up for the Nov. 6 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships in Hillsdale, Mich.  They'll be back on the same course in Louisville for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 20.
